About the referendum

Sweden's first referendum. The temperance movement was strong, and since 1919 spirits had been rationed with a ration book (motbok). No won with 51.0 percent against 49.0, and prohibition was never introduced. Men and women voted on different ballots: women were mostly in favour of prohibition, men against.

All Swedish national referendums have been advisory. Parliament is not bound by the outcome.

Only the result for the whole country is shown. County boundaries were different before 1968: the city of Stockholm was a county of its own, and today's Skåne and Västra Götaland were several counties. The counties therefore cannot be shown on today's map.
